Say what you will about "spires", "antenna", floors, etc.
The CN Tower in Toronto is 553m high, and has been since 1975.
It is the tallest free standing structure in the world.
Petronas did not touch it. Sears & WTC, not even close.
Even Taipei 101 falls 50 meters short.
Burj Dubai will crush all competitors, and it is TRULY impressive.
I am glad to see that something is finally being constructed that will put all arguments to rest. Burj takes the title!
Hwever, by the way - even the observation desk of Burj is 442m, which is 5 metres lower than the CN tower's 447m. Worlds highest observation desk. And, when you think about it, what good is a really tall 'spire', if you can't go up and look out from it?

I fully agree.
The heigh of a building is the height of it's roof, to my opinion.
But if you have to put a spire and pinnacle on top, some effort is necessary (crane or helicopter).
And for replacing the bulb of the top red light when it's broken, somebody has to go up...
(Such thought gives me the creeps!)
It is then that the real height is the top of the pinnacle, and not the roof... _________________ Marc

just a bit of useless trivia info.
the guys that change the light up there are called "tower climbers" and last year that particular occupation was rated by OSHA "THE" most dangerous job in the world! i think i will pass on that job should the oppotunity ever present itself. |

Dangerous, yes.
Most dangerous job in the world, I dont believe. Look to soldiers in Irak, some body guards and many others.
But I found today a blog or a forum of the TowerClimbersGroup.com with the following newsworthy sad information:

Tower-fall death being investigated
« on: March 21, 2007, 06:58:24 pm »
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An investigation is continuing this week into the death of Anthony Shands, 72, of Longview, who died Friday morning in Shreveport after falling while working on a 150-foot tower, said Cindy Chadwick of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office.

Recently I saw a documentary on TV about a guy doing maintenance on the Sears Tower antennae.
(I think is was the National Geographic Channel series "megastructures").
The guy stated that the biggest danger is in static electricity, lighting, and voltages that can appear when the antennae are actualy transmitting.
Switching off and earthing the antennae before climbing is essential, as well as the weather forecast.
For that reason, most maintenance and climbing is done at nighttime.
I expect the climbing itself (when you have no high anxiety!) is relatively safe, as you always wear a safety harness.
But looking to myself: not in a million years, not for a miillion Euro's! _________________ Marc

No.
You are not wholehearted.
For the chance of one million Euros
- you take aptly psychotropic drugs or
- you see the best psychologist before or
- you slip your memory with hypnosis or
- you coach yourself with rising workouts
... or some that all! _________________ I feel sometimes a little bit skyscraper excitement |

The KVLY-TV mast at 2,063 ft (628.8 m), it is currently the world's tallest supported structure on land. _________________ http://wine-review.blogspot.com/ |

Yes. But the KVLY-TV (KTHI-) mast in North Dakota isn´t a free standing structure. _________________ I feel sometimes a little bit skyscraper excitement |

Well.
The CN PR machine will try to make the boldest claim possible without lying. I suppose they can call it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. |
