At the end of July a statement of www.meed.com announces the Jeddah Kingdom Tower is getting closer to reality and EMAAR might be on eof the leading contractors. Very good news for all the mega-tall afficionados!
Here the link!

Here the text!
""With Nakheel effectively out of contention, the Saudi developer now has a golden opportunity to build an unassailable lead.
It looks like it will be a one-horse race after all. In 2008, Dubai-based developer Nakheel and Saudi Arabia's Kingdom Holding were locked in a behind-the-scenes competition to build the world's tallest tower.
Even for a region that already had an 818 metre-tall tower under construction -the Burj Dubai -the height of the proposed towers was staggering. Nakheel was working on the design for a 1.4 kilometre-tall tower, which Kingdom was going to better by going for the mile, or 1.609 kilometres.
The global financial crisis wrecked both developers' plans. First, Kingdom scaled back its tower to 1 kilometre, leaving Nakheel in pole position. But the Dubai developer's hopes were dashed when it was forced to shelve plans for most of its upcoming projects, including the planned tower, in December last year.
In February, it looked like Kingdom's tower was going the same way after Kingdom Holding reported record losses. However, unlike Dubai, the region's other real estate and construction markets are showing signs of activity, and Kingdom is leading the charge by moving ahead with its scaled down but still record-breaking 1 kilometre-tall tower.
In June, Kingdom brought in Emaar Properties, which is building the Burj Dubai, as the development manager for its tower and the Dubai-based developer has wasted no time in getting proposals from architects for the scheme. It now looks like work will start on the project in the next 12-18 months.
With Dubai's real estate market expected to stay in the doldrums for years rather than months, Kingdom's move will be decisive.
Kingdom has not won the race yet, but with Nakheel effectively out of contention, the Saudi developer has a golden opportunity to build an unassailable lead.

The taller the better, and I can't wait to visit Dubai, to see Burj Dubai, when completed in the upcoming fall!

Who knows what will become of this. It looks like a possibillity that it would be built, with all the money in Saudi Arabia, but I don't believe the report that Emaar is developement manager, why would they want to take away tourism from their own tower? _________________ ChaseTech:) |

| I don't think Saudi Arabia would have much more tourists, I mean, it is not a touristic country - except for visiting holy places by muslims. So I see no problem with Emaar getting involved. For Saudi Arabia it would be a show off anyway mostly. |

Yeah, showing off sounds just about right, but then again I wonder if they're planning for future income when their oil runs out.
Although as I said at the start of my first message, who knows. _________________ ChaseTech:) |

I think that's valid.
The Saudis are conscious of petroleum's finiteness. King Abdullah warned about peak oil as early as 1998, when he acted as regent for his brother King Fahd.

Abdullah began shaking the Kingdom out of its petroleum hangover by declaring in 1998 that the "boom is over and will not return — all of us must get used to a different lifestyle."
